Honouring Steven Armstrong

Born: April 16, 1985
Died: April 26, 2008

Steven played hockey with Red Circle from Novice (U9) through Juvenile (U21). Beyond being a dedicated player, Steven was a passionate volunteer who generously gave his time to support the club. He helped with dances, skate-a-thons, fudge sales, goalie clinics, player evaluations, and Awards Weekend.

Tragically, Steven was killed in a car accident just 10 days after his 23rd birthday. His parents, George and Aggie Armstrong, who proudly sponsored Steven’s teams through Standard Safety Equipment and later Trout Haven Park, wished to honour their son’s life and love of hockey. In September 2008, they organized a golf tournament in Steven’s memory, which later led to the creation of the Steven Armstrong Memorial Award.

A Letter from the Armstrong Family

The Steven Armstrong Memorial Award

Steven Armstrong (1985–2008) was a fun person, a fierce friend, and a feisty hockey player. Steven played in Red Circle Hockey from novice to juvenile and he loved the game. For years later he would watch hockey, play pick-up hockey, floor hockey, and found time to stay connected to the game through volunteering with Red Circle.

Steven helped with organizing dances, skate-a-thons, goalie clinics, evaluations, awards weekends, and any other odd task he was asked to help with.

The Red Circle Hockey Board of Directors acknowledged the gift Steven brought to the spirit of the game and of community by creating this award. In 2009, a volunteerism award was presented in Steven’s honour by the Board at Red Circle Hockey, and it has been presented every year since to a deserving player who demonstrates dedication to the club through both participation and volunteer service.

Eligible players must be 15 years of age or older and volunteer within the organization. The selected player is recognized for their commitment to ensuring all players have a positive experience at Red Circle and will receive free registration for the next season.

To support Red Circle Hockey and the kids who love the game, the Armstrong Family raised money by organizing and hosting annual golf tournaments and rubber ducky races at Trout Haven Park for 11 years. One hundred percent of all proceeds were donated to Red Circle Hockey from these events, totaling an estimated $50,000.

The Armstrong Family is grateful that this award continues to be presented in Steven’s name and in his honour and, for the foreseeable future, will continue to cover the cost of the recipient’s registration annually.

Thank you for continuing to value Steven’s contributions and thank you for continuing to recognize volunteerism in the sport. Volunteers are the heart behind the sport. Without volunteers, at all levels, we wouldn’t have the same equitable access to Canada’s favourite game.

With hearts filled with gratitude,
The Armstrong Family
