Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Register

My child has never skated or played hockey, can they still register?

Absolutely! As our motto states: “Equal Opportunity Regardless of Ability”. Each season, we welcome new players of all ages and skill levels. Whether your child is stepping onto the ice for the first time or returning after a break, they are welcome in our program. Our coaches are trained to work with all skill levels and help children learn and grow through the season.

What division is my child in?

Divisions are based on your child's age as of December 31 of the current year:
  • U7 – Ages 4, 5, 6
  • U9 – Ages 7, 8
  • U11 – Ages 9, 10
  • U13 – Ages 11, 12
  • U15 – Ages 13, 14
  • U18 – Ages 15, 16, 17
  • U21 – Ages 18, 19, 20

What days of the week will my child play?

We do not know the exact days until the City of London releases their ice allocations, which typically happens in September. However, based on past seasons, most divisions (excluding U7 and U9) usually have one weeknight practice and one weekend game. U7 and U9 divisions generally have a practice and a game on the weekends. Please visit our General Information - House League page for more specific expectations. Note that holidays, tournaments, or special events may occasionally shift this routine.

When does the hockey season start?

The hockey season usually begins in late September or early October, once the City has installed the ice in local arenas. The first part of the season includes player evaluations to help form balanced teams. Stay informed by visiting redcirclehockeyclub.com and downloading the SportsHeadz App, which we use to communicate schedules and team info.

How long is the season?

The season starts with evaluations in late September or early October and concludes with Championship Weekend in late March. This includes weekly practices, games, and a tournament, with breaks during holidays.

Do the house league teams play in any tournaments?

Yes. All house league teams participate in the Red Circle Annual Tournament (RCAT), which is held during the regular season. This is a fun and competitive highlight of the year and allows players to experience games in a tournament like format.

What is the difference between House League and the Raiders Program?

The House League is recreational and is open to all players regardless of skill level. It focuses on fun, development, and teamwork. The Raiders Program, on the other hand, is a more competitive stream that requires tryouts and includes travel, more ice time, and a higher level of commitment from both players and families. For more information, visit the Raiders Program page.

Can I request to play with another child on the same team?

Yes, during registration you will see a request box where you can note a request to play with another child. While we do our best to accommodate such requests, we cannot guarantee them due to team balancing requirements and the high number of registrations. However, we do make every effort to honor sibling requests.

Can I request a certain coach for my child?

No. To maintain fairness, consistency, and proper development, we do not allow families to choose their coach. Teams are created by balancing skill levels and ensuring each team is as fair as possible. If you have a specific concern about a coach, please refer to the Code of Conduct located under Risk Management Resources.

After You Register

What equipment does my child need for hockey?

Your child will need full CSA-approved hockey equipment. A detailed list can be found on our Equipment Checklist page. A game jersey and socks are provided by the club however players and goalies should also have their own practice jersey. Don't forget the water bottle!

Am I allowed in my child’s dressing room?

This depends on your child’s age and gender, as well as our Dressing Room Policy. In general, for younger players (U7/U9), one parent or guardian may assist with dressing. For older players (U13+), access may be restricted. All adults entering dressing rooms must follow our safety protocols. Review our full policy under Risk Management Resources.

When will the schedule be available?

The season schedule is finalized shortly before the season starts, once we receive ice time allocations from the City. When ready, it will be posted on our website and in the SportsHeadz App. After your child is assigned to a team, you’ll receive an app notification.

Please note: evaluations happen before teams are created. These skates are typically organized by players’ last names, with details posted on our website.

How do evaluation skates work?

Evaluation skates are held at the start of the season to assess players’ skills and help create balanced teams. Players are grouped by division (e.g., U9, U11) and take part in basic hockey drills while being observed by our volunteers. More information, including dates and times, will be posted on the website before evaluations begin.

When will I be contacted about my child’s team?

Once all registrations are complete, families will be contacted in mid-to-late September. You will receive your child’s first evaluation skate time via email and on the website. Following evaluations, team assignments will be communicated as soon as rosters are finalized.

I registered but can no longer play. How do I ask for a refund?

If your child is unable to play, please refer to our Refund Policy, which can be found on the General Information - House League page.

When will I first hear from Red Circle after registration?

For U7 players, a dedicated team of volunteers will reach out directly with your child’s schedule. For all other divisions, you will be contacted by either the division convener or your child’s evaluation team coach. Please note that Red Circle is run entirely by volunteers, and sometimes final details aren’t confirmed until just before the first skate. We appreciate your patience and encourage you to visit our Contact Us page if you have any questions or concerns.

What type of hockey development does Red Circle offer?

Red Circle partners with third-party professionals to offer development clinics for both players and goalies. These clinics focus on skating, puck control, shooting, goaltending fundamentals, and overall hockey IQ. You can find more details on our Hockey Clinics page. We also provide coaching resources and support aligned with Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) principles to help every child grow at their own pace.

Are coaches paid?

No. All of our coaches are dedicated volunteers who generously donate their time to help kids develop their skills and enjoy the game. If you're interested in making a positive impact, we welcome new volunteers every season. You can register to be a coach through the Coach Registration link on our website: redcirclehockeyclub.com. If the season has already started and you're interested in helping as an assistant coach, please email [email protected].

How can I volunteer?

Our club thrives because of dedicated volunteers. Opportunities include coaching, on-ice helpers, trainers, conveners, and fundraising roles. For details about each role and how to apply, visit our Volunteer Page. We welcome anyone with a passion for hockey and a desire to create a positive experience for our players — no previous hockey experience is required, and training will be provided.
